Editor's note: (How this initiative came to be) 'Do smartphones facilitate local travel?' our friends at the Local Travel Movement asked a few years ago and this is part of our reply. If we wish to facilitate local travel, then we need to be talking up the apps that actually connect people and places. Presenting 40+ places to check in in Oaxaca.
Oaxaca de Juárez, México - Summer 2013 we debut our collection of cool places to 'check in' including parks, historic trees, museums, restaurants and hotels. There's something for locals and visitors and hopefully a way to bring people together.
Check out the Oaxaca Check In Stickers and our selection of must-see places and must-visit friends.
Background: The popularity of cellphones and smartphones that have access to the social web -- Facebook, Flickr, Google, YouTube -- has changed our relationship to the world. What's happening in Oaxaca is playing out across the globe, meaning that places are being engaged by different generations with different needs.
Our burgeoning digital literacy is transforming the ways we interact with places and people. It's possible now to 'check in' at the Árbol de Tule and many other trees and tree sculptures (seek out the work of Ricardo Lopez Pinacho).
Plaque-loving visitors now have directions for the monuments on Calzada de la República and historic points of interest including the Zócalo and Plaza de la Danza. Fans of Colonial Mexico can check in at places older than some countries.
